The Story
This covered patio in Carlsbad opens from a wall of sliding glass doors toward the view, with exposed wood beams overhead and a stacked stone fireplace at one end. The floor is laid in handcrafted Artillo San Felipe tile in Tuscan Mustard, a lantern-shaped concrete tile set in a repeating pattern with gray grout lines that trace each curve. Because every piece is cast and finished by hand, the color shifts from tile to tile, moving through warm browns, rust and deep plum tones with soft, mottled surfaces. The variation gives the large floor an aged, lived-in character, and the curving shape softens the straight lines of the beams, doors and stone hearth.
