Why clay

The kiln has been lit since 1966

We opened in Venice in 1966 throwing clay bricks for the milk route. Six decades later, the kiln is still lit.

ARTO origin story

ARTO opened on a milk route in Venice, California, making thin ceramic brick veneers for the neighborhood's walls and courtyards. The kiln never went cold. While the concrete line grew into our deepest catalog, clay remained the first language, the one everything else is measured against.

Ceramic clay takes glaze in a way no other substrate does. The surface captures and releases light. A satin glaze reads almost matte in morning shadow and luminous in afternoon sun. A matte reads chalky at noon and velvety at dusk. The color is in the glaze, which sits on the clay, which sits on the wall. Three layers of material, all alive together.

Far from perfect. That is the whole point. No two tiles come out of the kiln identical. The variation is not a flaw to engineer away. It is the record of fire, and it is exactly what distinguishes a handcrafted ceramic from a pressed porcelain.

What's inside

Fifteen ways to work in clay

One material. Fifteen tracks through the catalog. From the workshop-floor geometry of Studio to the painted narratives of California Revival, each collection runs deep on glaze, form, and custom possibility.

Field tile

Studio Tile

Field tile for walls that want a handmade voice.

As the true workhorse of our clay line, this collection grounds a space in honest craftsmanship. It is available in foundational 3x6, 2x8, and 6x6 formats, alongside an expansive selection of custom geometric shapes, tailored sizes, and intricate, traditional Arabesque patterns. Crafted from a robust red clay body, these tiles offer the rare versatility to move effortlessly from striking feature walls to high-traffic floors. Each piece is finished with a nuanced glaze that embraces variation, capturing, holding, and reading the light differently at every angle and every hour of the day.

Five Studio field sizes are held in stock with no minimum, 8x8, 6x6, 4x4, 3x3 and 2x8, sold unglazed. Stock moves, so the Studio page carries what is actually on the floor.

Field tile, extruded

Corduroy Tile

A ribbed surface is extruded into the clay body before firing, so the texture is structural, not applied.

Run it vertically for height, or horizontally for breadth. This collection is built on a rich, robust red clay body, which serves as a warm, earthy foundation beneath the surface. Because the fluted channels are structurally extruded into the raw clay, the application of the glaze becomes incredibly dynamic: it naturally pools deep within the grooves, darkening to reveal the clay's underlying depth, while pulling tight and reading lighter on the ridges. The result is a striking, high-contrast interplay between the fiery character of the red clay and the shifting light of the room.

Oleson Tile

Handcrafted character with a softer edge.

The Oleson collection bridges the gap between rugged durability and refined artistry. Molded with distinctive pillowed edges and rounded corners, these tiles feature a natural, undulating surface that feels alive. Built from a robust red body ceramic and finished with iconic ARTO glazes, the liquid color pools beautifully across the face of the tile and eases gently over its corners, celebrating the unpredictable beauty of a truly handmade product.

Paver, floors and walls

Monrovia Tile

A handcrafted foundation for inside and out.

Bringing artisanal soul to high-traffic surfaces, the Monrovia collection features durable, 5/8 inch thick tile pavers engineered to move effortlessly between indoor comfort and outdoor elements. Each piece is crafted to balance structural resilience with a deeply human touch, offering a living surface that wears in, not out. Whether grounding an expansive outdoor patio or adding a rustic, tactile warmth to interior floors, these pavers deliver a timeless, honest character that elevates the architecture around it.

Relief, in ceramic

3D Impressions in Clay

The pattern is pressed into the clay body, not printed on the face.

Five patterns are cut for these ceramic wall panels. Compton, Compass Star, Buckle and Target at 6x6, and Bowtie at 2x12. Each one is formed in red clay and glazed, so the relief does two things at once. It throws a real shadow that moves across the wall through the day, and it gives the glaze somewhere to gather. Color pools in the low ground and pulls thin over the high ground. Available in the Premium High Fire and Signature Low Fire ranges, and figured on a 3/8 inch joint.

Metallic glazes

Metallic Glaze Series

Red body ceramic under a glaze that reads as struck metal.

These are the Studio field sizes, 8x8, 6x6, 4x4, 3x3 and 2x8, taken out of the standard glaze range and finished in the metallics instead. The effect is not a coating and not a foil. It is a glaze fired onto clay, so it holds the same handmade variation as everything else on this page and shifts from dull to bright as you cross the room. Availability on the metallics is limited and they price on their own, so this one starts with a call rather than a cart.

RR Collection, the same glazes

A four sided diamond at 2 3/4 by 2 7/8, cut three ways. Flat, convex and concave. Laid together on one wall the three faces take the same metallic glaze and give back three different levels of light, which is a quieter way to build a pattern than changing color.

Painted by hand

Handpainted Collection

Artistry applied by hand, fired for a lifetime.

The Handpainted Collection turns ceramic tile into a canvas, showcasing a breathtaking range of styles from the nostalgic warmth of Traditional California Revival to striking, clean contemporary designs. This collection proudly features Palm Royale, an exclusive, vibrant collaboration with world-renowned mosaic designer Allison Eden. Utilizing traditional techniques like the cuerda seca (dry line) method, our artisans hand-apply intricate glaze details that elevate individual tiles into stunning custom murals. This is where centuries-old ceramic heritage meets bold, modern design.

Six books of drawings, one hand

All of it is red body ceramic, half an inch thick, square edged, and finished in Signature Low Fire glazes. Any design in any of these six can be repainted in colors you choose.

  • California Revival

The pattern language of early California tile work, painted deco by deco. It comes at 4x4, 6x6 and 8x8.

  • California Revival Murals

Three set pieces, sold as complete sets. Two Peacocks and Vase at 24 by 42 inches, twenty eight tiles. Blue Vase and Pelican at 12 by 18, six tiles each.

  • Transitional

The same three sizes drawn with a quieter line, for rooms that want the pattern without the period.

  • Kaleidoscope

6x6 and 8x8, where the drawing has room to resolve. There is no 4x4 in this series.

  • Palm Royale by Allison Eden

Decos at 6x6 and on a 6 inch hexagon, plus the Peacock mural at 36 by 60 inches, sixty tiles to the design set.

  • KLE Series

One size only, just under 8 inches square. Two designs in two color combinations, and a custom route if neither is the one.

Pattern series, screened

Scirocco Collection

A full field in seven glazes, with decos cut to every size in it.

Scirocco is the one of the three you can build an entire room from. The field runs 8x8, 6x6 and 4x4, and the deco library is made in those same three sizes and sold by the piece. So the pattern can be scattered a tile at a time through a plain field, or packed solid into a panel, without changing the module of the wall.

Field glazesSnow, Spice, Black, Gray, Turquoise, Brown and Gold. Sizes 8x8, 6x6 and 4x4, on a quarter inch joint. Handcrafted on the Studio field. Interior walls and floors, and wet conditions.

Peninsula Collection

Two glazes, and a whole menagerie set on them.

Peninsula holds its field back so the drawing can carry the room. Blue Satin and Pure White, and nothing else. The decos are the collection: fruit and tulips, a lobster, a seahorse, a lighthouse, a crab, a shell, a bear, a horse, a rooster, a deer, a butterfly. Two of them are murals rather than single tiles, sold as complete sets.

Field glazesBlue Satin and Pure White. Field at 6x6, 4x4, 3x3 and 3x6, decos at 6x6 and 4x4 by the piece. The Virgin mural is twelve 4x4 tiles, the Vase mural is six 6x6. Interior walls and floors, and wet conditions.

Silk Road

The whole field is the pattern, on an eight inch hexagon.

Silk Road has no plain tile to fall back on. Every piece carries the design, and the design is screened tight enough to register from one hexagon to the next. Laid out, they close into a continuous pattern with no straight seam running through it, which a square tile cannot do.

Blonde body

CLARA Tierra Madre

Honoring the material truth of our blonde bisque.

Named after "Mother Earth," the Tierra Madre texture is a design-forward nod to the sweeping natural beauty of California and the planet. We achieve this deeply tactile texture by glazing the back side of the tile, a process that purposefully exposes and highlights the raw, foundational beauty of our blonde bisque substrate. Rather than masking imperfections, this technique celebrates them, yielding an exceptional level of surface and color variation alongside beautifully irregular, hand-formed edges that ensure every single piece carries its own unique history.

The rangeFifteen CLARA glazes: Nougat, Mango, Cantaloupe, Pearl, Caviar, Sealion, Royal, Denim, Fossil, Apple, Bermuda, Mochi, Fog, Vanilla and Latte. Field at 6x6, 4x4, 2x8 and a 4 inch hexagon, plus the Amaryllis and Arabesque 8C sets. Quarter round, beak and inside quarter round trim. Quarter inch joints. Walls.

Blonde body, deco

Tierra Madre Decos

The same blonde body, cut for pattern.

Five designs on an eight inch hexagon, each one made in black and in white, and one four inch square deco in the same two. Nothing else. It is a short list, and it holds. Black or white over a blonde body carries enough contrast to read a pattern from across a room, and the distressed face keeps it from going flat. Set them into a CLARA field, or run them on their own.

One difference to know about. The CLARA field is for walls. These decos go on walls and floors.

Brick, glazed

Glazed Brick Veneer

A wire cut brick face, 5/8 inch thick, under a wet glaze.

Cutting the brick with a wire leaves a dragged, open face, and that face is the reason this reads as brick and not as a rectangular tile. The glaze catches on every drag mark and settles into the pull of it. Fifty two Signature Low Fire glazes are made for it, from the near black to the near white, and the range runs through greens, blues and clay reds in between. It comes as a field piece, a wrapped corner and a grooved face, set on a 3/8 inch joint.

Artazzo Clay

A luminous reimagining of the classic brick.

Sourced and crafted locally in Southern California, Artazzo begins as a traditional clay paver, precision-cut to reveal the breathtaking natural aggregate hidden within. This innovative process transforms raw ceramic into a terrazzo-inspired surface that perfectly bridges the gap between earthy character and modern luxury. Available in a curated palette of eleven solid colors and six expressive blends, these tiles perform beautifully across high-impact walls and floors alike. With modular sizes, including 1x8, 2x4, 2x8, and 4x8, Artazzo turns a durable, moisture-resistant material into an unforgettable architectural statement.

Brick and cobble

Catalina Brick and Cobble

One word stretching from the Pacific to the Sonoran.

Catalina is a California island. Catalina is a mountain range towering above Tucson. Now, it names an ARTO brick. Available as both a traditional paver and a smaller cobble format precision-cut down to size, this collection offers a striking wire-cut face, crisp square edges, and a clean, flat surface.

The collection expands into twelve distinct clay colors defined by natural, atmospheric depth: flashed browns and iron-spot greys, a Saltillo warmth that looks sun-dried, a burgundy that reads black until you look twice, and reds that move from coral to deep clay to vivid sunset. Each color is fired completely through the body, not painted on, ensuring rugged durability for both indoor and outdoor applications. The brick wears the way the brick was made, a single material designed to bridge two horizons.

Glaze

The color is not on the clay, it is fired into it

Every series on this page is finished from one of three glaze families, and a few of them carry a range of their own on top of that. Which family a series takes is not a preference. It is decided by how the piece is fired.

  • Signature Low Fire

The broadest range, and the one that does the work across the ceramic line. It is the only family made for Glazed Brick and for the Handpainted decos, which is why those two carry the deepest color between them.

Where it goesGlazed Brick, in fifty two colors. Every Handpainted deco. The Studio field, alongside Premium High Fire. 3D Impressions.

  • Premium High Fire

Fired hotter, and the range a piece takes when it has to survive more than a wall. Monrovia is made in these and in nothing else, which follows from what Monrovia is, a paver rated for outdoors and for freeze and thaw.

Where it goesMonrovia, exclusively. The Studio field, alongside Signature Low Fire. 3D Impressions.

  • Metallic Glazes

A short, separate range that reads as struck metal rather than as color. It is not a coating and not a foil. It is a glaze fired onto clay, so it varies from piece to piece the way the rest of this page does.

Where it goesThe Metallic Glaze Series and the RR Collection.

Four series carry their own range instead. CLARA has fifteen Tierra Madre glazes of its own, made for the blonde body. Scirocco has seven, Peninsula has two, and the Tierra Madre Decos come in black and in white. Those are named on their own sections above.

The Metallic glazes are not in this grid. They are a short separate range that reads as struck metal rather than as color, and they are shown on the Metallic Glaze Series and RR sections above. Ask us for those samples by name.

Trim and accessories

Forty two pieces to finish the edge

A field of tile stops somewhere. It meets a counter, turns a corner, runs into a door casing, or lands on a floor. The Studio Series accessories are the pieces that make those endings look intended rather than cut.

One range covers four collections on this page. The trim is made for the Studio field, and it fits Oleson, Monrovia and Corduroy as well, because all four are the same red body at the same half inch.

  • Six

    Edges and corners

Quarter round, quarter round beak, inside quarter round, inside beak corner, and a V cap with its own corner.

  • Six

    Cove base

Cove base at 6x6 and 3x6, both again with a bullnose top, plus an inside and an outside corner so a base can turn either way.

  • Twelve

    Mouldings

Moulding A and B, five numbered profiles, Waterbury, Cornice, Rutland, and a base moulding with or without a cove.

  • Two

    Chair rails

Two profiles, both six inches long, for the horizontal that breaks a wall at hand height.

  • Eight

    Liners

Pencil liners at 5/8 and one inch, a grooved pencil, a one inch square, pinnacle liners at one and two inches, a P liner and a staged liner.

  • Eight

    Surface bullnose

6x6, 4x4 and 3x3, each with a matching corner, plus a 3x6 on its short side and a 3x6 on its long side.

Every one of the forty two can be ordered glazed or unglazed, in the Premium High Fire and Signature Low Fire ranges, so an edge can match its field exactly or sit deliberately against it.

CLARA is the exception, because it is a blonde body rather than a red one. It carries three pieces of its own, a quarter round, a beak and an inside quarter round, in the same fifteen Tierra Madre glazes as its field.

Material truth

Rustic Elegance

Rough and refined at the same time. A handcrafted edge where no two pieces are exactly alike. A surface that ages with the room, in a palette of thirty eight colors.

It is not a marketing phrase. It is a material truth. Far from perfect, and that is the whole point.
